Mother Teresa Maria, Prioress of the Discalced Carmelite Monastery in Camaiore, was Maria Valtorta’s closest confidante. The cloistered nun by vocation and the cloistered nun by infirmity never met, but for twelve years they corresponded intensely, sharing their anxieties about the developments of the Work—now known as “The Gospel as It Was Revealed to Me”—and confiding in each other the intimate thoughts of their sisters. In her letters to the one she had chosen as her spiritual mother, Maria Valtorta signed herself “Sister Maria of the Cross.”
This is the name that Jesus gave her on September 14, 1944. The first volume of the correspondence between Maria Valtorta and Mother Teresa Maria covers the period December 1945 – December 1946. In the second volume we collect the letters from 1947 to 1957.
