The writings of Maria Valtorta present us with the fisherman who said of himself: “It frightens me too much… to think that I am an ‘apostle.’ […] To… to be too… too fat compared to the clay that I am, and to fear that the weight will make me collapse… Afraid of… being proud and acting like a rooster… Afraid that… with the idea that I am an apostle, the others… the disciples, I mean, and the good souls will keep their distance and remain silent even if I am mistaken…” (EMV 382.4)

But Simon is also the one to whom Jesus will say: “[…] later, the light will come upon you, not for a moment, but for an indissoluble union of the eternal Spirit with your soul, which will make your teaching concerning the Kingdom of God infallible. It will be the same for your successors as for you, if they live on God as their only bread.” (EMV 180.5)

Peter was married to Porphyry, a discreet and virtuous woman, but the couple had no children. They adopted a boy, Marziam (Martial), who would become an evangelist.

Peter’s personality, his weaknesses, and his courage made him a major witness to the life of Christ and a pillar of the Christian faith.
