Maria Valtorta’s handwritten notes on the pages of the book are justified by the assertion that Emmerich was a true mystic, but her visions, which she recounted to the poet and scholar Clemens Brentano, were written by him with expansions and manipulations.
(This was not the case with Valtorta’s visions, which she wrote directly and reproduced in print with absolute fidelity.)
